Long regarded as one of Hilton Head Island’s most popular golf courses, the Country Club of Hilton Head has unveiled newly restored greens that will secure the semi-private course’s place among the best layouts on this legendary resort island.

All 18 greens at the Country Club have been replanted with MiniVerde, ultra dwarf Bermudagrass, which has become the most popular green surface for championship-caliber golf courses throughout the Southern U.S. Originally developed as an alternative to fine-textured bentgrass, MiniVerde is highly regarded as a low-maintenance, weather-resistant surface that retains its color and holds uniform coverage in high-traffic areas. But golfers love MiniVerde because it offers a firm, fast and true putting surface that can be easily maintained between 9 and 11 on a Stimpmeter.  It’s not surprising that many of the courses that host events on the PGA, LPGA and PGA Champions tours now feature MiniVerde greens.

According to Head Professional Chip Pellerin, the Country Club will formally unveil its new greens in September with a special members-only event.

“We are very excited about unveiling these terrific new greens to our members as well as to island residents and visitors,” said Pellerin. “They can look forward to a truly world-class golf experience. These new surfaces will greatly enhance the playability and challenge of the golf course and help secure the Country Club’s position among the Lowcountry’s finest courses.”

Designed by noted architect Rees Jones, the Country Club opened to critical acclaim in 1986 and has twice served as a local qualifying site for the U.S. Open. The course has received a Four-Star rating for excellence by Golf Digest and received the 2010 Reader’s Choice Award as the island’s “Best Golf Course/Club” by readers of the Island Packet.

The Country Club is an exhilarating test that meanders through one of Hilton Head Island’s most elevated sites. But with five sets of tees that play from 5,373 to just over 6,900 yards, the course is also extremely playable for all skill levels. The Country Club is highlighted by one of the Lowcountry’s most scenic holes: the 575-yard, par-five 12th, a rolling par-five with a blind tee shot that plays to a large green tucked into the marshes of Skull Creek.

The Country Club also offers the finest amenities of any full service club in the Lowcountry. There is an excellent teaching/practice facility, six soft-surface (Har-Tru) tennis courts and a large outdoor swimming pool, and the stately clubhouse features an indoor pool, a fully-equipped 5,500-square-foot fitness center, and both casual and fine dining.

Owned and operated by ClubCorp, the Country Club of Hilton Head is located just inside the back gate of Hilton Head Plantation. The course is open for outside play, and membership opportunities are currently available as well.
